Body language and gestures in Korea

Body language and gestures are very important in Korean culture. They help people show respect, politeness, and good manners in daily communication. Even without speaking Korean, gestures can say a lot.

One of the most common gestures in Korea is bowing. People bow to greet others, say thank you, apologize, or show respect. Bowing is especially important when speaking to older people, teachers, or people with higher status. The deeper the bow, the more respect it shows.

Another important gesture is using two hands. In Korea, people often use both hands when giving or receiving objects, such as gifts, money, or business cards. This gesture shows respect and good manners. Using only one hand can sometimes be seen as impolite, especially in formal situations.

Handshakes are also used, mainly in professional settings. However, they are often combined with a small bow. This shows politeness and respect at the same time.

Eye contact is another important part of body language. In Korean culture, long or strong eye contact with elders or authority figures is usually avoided. This behavior is a sign of respect, not a lack of confidence.

Learning about body language and gestures helps people understand Korean culture better. These small actions show how respect and politeness are very important values in Korean society.
